Facebook relies on Swiss technology

Facebook’s infrastructure is becoming a little more Swiss. As announced by the Swiss tech company U-Blox, Facebook uses its product ZED-F9T – a receiver module for the global satellite navigation system (GNSS). With this, the US company wants to reduce the computing power required to synchronize several computers in a network. The company calls the Facebook solution that is responsible for this Time Card.

With the GNSS receiver module from U-Blox, the computing effort of Time Card should now be more efficient. To ensure that the timing between the various computers in a network is correct, the Facebook solution accesses the atomic clocks on board dozens of GNSS satellites in orbit. In order to bridge any gaps, Time Card also has access to a backup time source in the form of a miniaturized atomic clock.
