The social network said “malicious actors” collected the data by scraping, a technique that uses robots to store information that becomes public.

The company said that this was possible from a “misuse” of a tool that helped users find friends more easily using the phone’s contact list and that this flaw would have been corrected in September 2019.

The disclosure of phone numbers, e-mails and dates of birth on a hacker forum was disclosed not last Saturday (3).

“The leak did not include financial, health or password information,” said Facebook, noting that “the specific problem that allowed this data to leak in 2019 no longer exists.”
