In the south and center of Germany there is a risk of severe traffic disruptions on Wednesday due to heavy snowfall and freezing rain. In addition to massive disruptions to road and rail traffic, the German Weather Service (DWD) also warns of damage to the infrastructure as a result of large ice loads on masts and buildings. Power outages are also possible.
Deutsche Bahn announced on its website that impacts on regional and long-distance transport cannot be ruled out. The company asked passengers to find out about their connection before traveling. Anyone who wants to postpone their trip planned for Wednesday can use their ticket at a later date. The train connection has been lifted. According to Deutsche Bahn, seat reservations can be canceled free of charge.
Flight operations in Frankfurt and Munich restricted
Germany’s largest airport in Frankfurt am Main expects “delays in operations and flight cancellations”. Lufthansa announced that it would only offer a fuselage flight plan on Wednesday. According to the airport’s specifications, only the most necessary flights will be able to be offered at the Frankfurt and Munich hubs, said a company spokesman. Short routes as well as long routes would be canceled. According to the spokesman, the range of flights on offer is far from covering demand.
Lots of black ice south of the Main and Moselle
According to the DWD, the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Thuringia and Saxony are either fully or partially affected by the extreme risk of black ice and ice breakage caused by freezing rain. In certain regions there is a warning of extreme storms.
According to the weather service, rain will begin in the southwest from the second half of the night onwards, and by Wednesday evening there will be massive black ice formation due to freezing rain, especially south of the Main and Moselle. From southern Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland to southern Hesse and northwestern Bavaria, rainfall amounts of between 20 and 30 liters per square meter can even cause “extreme ice build-up” on objects, overhead lines and trees.
