Extortion Scandal Uncovered at KPK Detention Center in Jakarta, Employees Face Ethics Trial

Jakarta

The Supervisory Board of the Corruption Eradication Commission (Dewas KPK) revealed a number of findings when examining KPK employees at the ethics hearing in the illegal levies case (extortion) at the KPK Detention Center. Dewas said there is a charge of IDR 200-300 thousand for services to charge cellphone batteries at the KPK Detention Center.

“Charging a cellphone costs around IDR 200 to IDR 300 thousand, per time,” said KPK Dewas Member Albertina Ho at the KPK Dewas Building, Jakarta, Thursday (18/1/2024).

Albertina said that prisoners also have to pay again if they want to charge their cellphone batteries using a power bank. However, Albertina has not detailed the tariff range.

“For example, cellphones will then be told, cellphones need power, right? There’s a powerbank. If you charge the powerbank, you’ll have to pay too,” he said.

Not only that, Albertina revealed that there is a fee for prisoners who want to put their cell phones into detention. The detainees have to pay Rp. 10 to Rp. 20 million.

“Around how much, Rp. 10-20 million, yes, as long as he uses the cellphone, right, but wait for him to pay monthly,” he said.

Previously, KPK Dewas Member Syamsuddin Haris also said about the discovery of extortion at the KPK Detention Center. Haris said that KPK employees charged money from prisoners who wanted to receive special services in the detention center.

“Basically, by charging prisoners, the prisoners will receive more services,” said KPK Dewas member Syamsuddin Haris at the KPK Dewas building, Jakarta, Wednesday (17/1).

Haris revealed that this extortion took the form of receiving certain amounts of money from KPK employees to obtain facilities. These facilities, said Haris, range from communication services in the form of cellphones to charging cellphone batteries.

“Basically, by charging prisoners, the prisoners will get more services. For example, cellphones for communication, for example. It could also be in the form of charging cellphones and so on,” he said.

Haris revealed that there were 93 KPK employees who would face an ethics trial regarding their alleged involvement in illegal levies at the KPK detention center. Dewas said the 93 employees on trial ranged from the head of the detention center (karutan) to the team commander.

“There are all kinds of 93. There are heads of prisons, there are former heads of prisons, there are some like team commanders, there are regular staff guarding prisoners,” said Haris.

The Value of Prison Extortion Reaches IDR 6.1 Billion

Dewas also revealed developments in the estimated value of the KPK detention center extortion value. Dewas’ initial findings in September 2023 stated that the amount of extortion at the KPK detention center reached IDR 4 billion. Earlier this week, the KPK Council stated that the value of the extortion in this case was IDR 6.1 billion.

“Around IDR 6.148 billion. That’s the total in the Supervisory Board,” said KPK Dewas member Albertina Ho.
