Exploring Urban Culture at the Perspectives Festival in Bayonne: A Vibrant Return to the Sources

Start in a week of the Festival “Perspectives” in Bayonne (October 18-22). For the seventh edition why urban culture meeting, the artistic direction evokes a return to the sources in relation to the tone during the first edition (2017) with graffiti and tagging, in particular, even if the frescoes will be well painted throughout the festival. The village will be located at Square Gambetta.

A hundred frescoes since the start of the festival

Since the launch of this festival in 2017, around a hundred frescoes have been produced and between eight and ten new ones will be produced again this year. An architectural painting will be carried out on the facade of the Didier Deschamps stadiumwith colors representative of the city’s two clubs, Les Croisés and Aviron“, specifies Damien Auriault, one of the two artists behind this project. “The artists all have carte blanche. So I’m going to find out what will be produced“, specifies Alban Morlot, who is the artistic director of “Points de vue”.

He lists a few places:I will be particularly impatient to discover certain places like the one which will be above the Xurasko bar, rue fishmonger, because we are intruding into the protected area of Bayonne. I also have a lot of expectations about the American artist Maya Hayuk who has a very colorful, very vibrant but also very committed universe. And she will be well exposed since she takes care of Balichon, on the BAB.

Growing enthusiasm at all levels

The public is growing in number according to Louise Martin, director of the Kaxu gallery, which is the association that founded the festival with the City of Bayonne: “We can indeed see that there is passage under the frescoes, a lot of street art visits and the tourist office tells us that they receive requests to know where the works are. We also notice this in the attendance at registrations for workshops and village evenings where we can have up to 500 or even 800 people in one evening..

It is difficult to give attendance figures at the foot of the frescoes as it is complicated to quantify but Alban Merlot, the artistic director, also confirms that the festival is attracting more and more. According to him, “Points of view” enjoys a certain notoriety which he did not have before: “I have five to six new private co-owners who offer me sites every year and who follow up with me, when I don’t respond, because they want a fresco on their building.“He is also contacted.”by artists throughout the year but I operate by invitation so it mainly allows me to do artistic monitoring“, he explains.

Proof that the festival is now part of the Bayonne landscape, the Little wily one, the tourism office or even the Guide to the Basque Country list the works in their guides.
