Every year, the city of Munich awards its university prize, each worth 5,000 euros, to the three major Munich universities for outstanding theses. A prerequisite for an application is that the work deals with the city of Munich, with its urban planning, economic or cultural development.
New Urban Tourism als Trend
The tourism student Francesca Rübesamen received the University Prize of the Munich University of Applied Sciences this year. In her bachelor thesis she examined the phenomenon of “New Urban Tourism” using the example of selected districts of Munich. New urban tourism defines a new type of city tourism, in which guests want to gain an insight into everyday life in the city they are visiting and get to know authentic quarters off the beaten track.
“The Werksviertel-Mitte, the Glockenbach- and the Gärtnerplatzviertel are considered to be particularly attractive for authentic encounters in Munich,” says Rübesamen, explaining the starting point of their work. There, the bachelor student asked tourists about the attractiveness of these places and the relevance of insider tips for their city trips. With the locals, on the other hand, she recorded their perception of tourism in the districts, with the result: New urban tourism is a trend in Munich city tourism.
Complex topic clearly discussed
The City of Munich considers Rübesamen’s work to be worthy of an award because – as far as possible – it clearly and comprehensively discusses a very complex topic and the associated research questions and provides a basic framework for further, more detailed studies on the topic.
Prof. Dr. Klaus Kreulich, Vice President Teaching at Munich University of Applied Sciences: “The award of our graduate Francesca Rübesamen by the City of Munich is valuable evidence for the entire HM of our innovative ability and the strong anchoring in Munich as a science and business location.”
The prize was awarded by Munich Mayor Katrin Habenschaden and Clemens Baumgärtner, the speaker for labor and business.
