Exploring Spain’s International Film Festivals in 2023

Cinema has been considered the Seventh Art ever since Ricciotto Canudo, the Italian artist and film critic, coined the expression. Canudo considered that together with Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, Music, Poetry and Literature and Dance, cinema was also an art.

Cinema is art and culture and a reflection of society. In some cases it is a look at the times in which we live, past times or the future that we hope for or fear. At times it is pure fantasy and at others it reflects a harsh reality, but it is always a prism through which to contemplate the world and, at times, a furious social criticism from an ironic or real point of view.

Spain is filled with International Film Festivals throughout its geography. Our country is a cinematographic power and many of our festivals are internationally recognized for their high quality. We have festivals dedicated to horror films, erotic films, short films, animated films and, also, to present new releases that will be seen in the most commercial theaters. We have established film festivals and other emerging ones, but they all have something important to communicate.
