At the end of April, 49 1st year high school students from Joseph-Saverne high school, appearing in History-Geography-Geopolitics-Political Science (HGGSP), went to Alsace to discover part of the its rich heritage and delightful history.

The students thus discovered, under the snow, the site of the sinister concentration camp Natzweiler-Struthof, the westernmost one built by the Nazi regime, in Alsace which was then attached to the Third Reich.

A visit to the Alsace-Moselle Memorial gave the opportunity, during an immersive journey, to understand how the Alsatians and the Moselans had to endure three wars and change their nationality four times between 1870 and 1945.

The students were able to understand the severity of the First World War by visiting the trenches and the Hartmannswillerkopf National Memorial, where nearly 30,000 French and German soldiers were counted killed. , lost or injured.

Alsace was also marked by the battles of Liberation in 1944 and 1945: the visit to Colmar and the National Necropolis of Sigolsheim allowed us to consider the fight led by the French and the Americans to seize ” pocket of Colmar”, which the Germans held until now. February 1945.

The students will have discovered that the Alsatians sometimes had to fight against each other.

Visit the European Parliament

The other part of the trip was dedicated to Europe and its institutions, it was studied in class: with the European elections approaching, the students were able to visit the European Parliament, in in Strasbourg, and go to full session. Everyone had a test translated as one in 24 languages.

The trip was also an opportunity to experience the rich heritage and architecture of the area. The students had the opportunity to visit an Alsatian village from the beginning of the 20th century which has been recreated in the Ecomusée d’Alsace in Ungersheim and to explore with their guide the historical centers of Strasbourg and Colmar and some of the most beautiful wine towns: Kaysersberg, Riquewihr or Ribeauvillé.
