Expired Vaccines Controversy in Zacatecas: Parents Raise Concerns about Children’s Inoculation in November 2022

Mothers and fathers of families in Zacatecas raised their voices, as children are supposedly inoculated with expired vaccines in November 2022 in some schools.

Doctors from Zacatecas denounced the Ministry of Health because they allegedly told them to apply expired vaccines to children. Parents received the news that girls and boys in institutions would receive this dose against Covid-19.

This dose, which allegedly had an expiration date, last November of the year 2022 and that just as of this week the state authorities, mainly those related to the Health sector, were the ones that gave the indication.

These vaccines, according to what was reported by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), although they are marked with an expiration date of November 2022, could still be used in the coming months without causing any risk to the health of girls and boys who receive this dose.

Despite what the Commission said, the parents showed their discontent, but mainly their concern. After this, the state government announced the statement confirming that girls and boys will have no problem receiving the dose.

There are around 32 thousand doses that will be applied in the next few days in educational institutions. Expert health authorities have mentioned that vaccines should continue to be applied, especially with the mutations that may exist in the virus, and it is essential that they are in good condition.

It is known that, in general, there is a certain shortage in the general vaccine scheme, the basic scheme, and with this, parents have also shown their discontent.

How do vaccines for Covid-19 work?

Vaccines work by simulating the Infectious agents

–viruses, bacteria or other microorganisms– that can cause disease. This “teaches” our immune system to generate a quick and effective response against the pathogen.

Traditional vaccines did this by introducing an attenuated form of an infectious agent so that our immune system would generate a memory of this agent. In this way, our immune system can quickly detect and fight the pathogen before it acts. Some of the vaccines for Covid-19 have been designed like this.
