In addition to the new variant known to be more contagious and deadly, Osterholm also said it was more likely to affect children, an age group that during the pandemic was less affected by Covid-19.

“Unlike previous strains of the virus, we didn’t see children under eighth grade getting infected frequently or that they didn’t get very sick often,” Osterholm said.

“Children play a big role in this transmission,” he added.

Osterholm said he initially supported students who were physically fit returning to the classroom, but because the virus mutated he advised against returning to school first.

“We have to do a better job of helping the public understand the pandemic. All we’re trying to do is get through the spike in cases that will occur over the next six to 10 weeks because of this variant of B117,” said Osterholm.

“When we saw that increase in cases, what we’ve seen before is that the virus has a tendency to spike and surge,” explained Walensky.
