When old age sets in, the degradation of myelin sheaths occurs quite naturally, under the influence of time and negative life factors. The result is a deterioration in mental abilities.
Researchers want to invent therapeutic techniques that promote the restoration of the myelin sheath. Experts turn their attention to protein mfsd2a, delivering lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) – a lipid containing omega-3 fatty acids – to the brain.
With mutations in Mfsd2a myelin sheath generation is significantly reduced. This then causes microcephaly.
The study led experts to the idea of conducting additional trials to find out if the introduction of omega-3 can restore the shell and improve mental ability in old age.
