Experts Say The Transition From Pandemic To Endemic Is Still Too Far

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA – Several countries have discussed the transition from pandemic to endemic. But in fact the change in status is not that easy.

This was revealed by Griffith University Epidemiologist, Dicky Budiman Indonesia.

Assign or revoke status pandemic can only be done by the World Health Organization or WHO.

“That is stated in the 2005 International Health Regulation which is an international convention. And Indonesia has ratified it as a member of WHO so that Indonesia is bound,” said Dicky to Tribunnews Monday (31/1/2022).

Thus changing the status from endemic to pandemic not individually or per country. As long as WHO has not repealed, the situation will remain pandemic.

And to change the status, a trial is needed as a determination mechanism. On the other hand, Dicky tries to straighten out if endemic status does not mean good.

“Bad epidemic, bad endemic. The good is under control. Endemic That doesn’t mean it’s over,” he said.

But looking at the current situation, especially the presence of the Omicron variant, it illustrates the transition pandemic to endemic is still far. Likewise in Indonesia.

“World epidemiologists will stare if we call the current situation has become endemic. Because it’s strange, there is no solid basis,” he concluded.
