Expert calls for trade restrictions for climate protection – SWR Aktuell

The earth could warm up even faster than feared. The climate report by the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) states that there is a 50 percent risk that global warming will exceed the threshold of 1.5 degrees in the next five years. This is no surprise for Mojib Latif, meteorologist and climate researcher at the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel. “Today we are already at 1.1 degrees compared to pre-industrial times. And we are still going in the wrong direction. Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing worldwide.”

The expert therefore calls for the industrialized nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible. In addition, trade with countries like China should be restricted. China currently emits a third of the world’s greenhouse gases. “These countries must not flood our markets with their non-sustainably manufactured products. We finally have to show a clear edge.”

In an interview with SWR Aktuell moderator Stefan Eich, he explains what other suggestions Latif has for taking action against climate change.
