Expensive helicopter rescue from runway accidents

Chronicle

An accident on the runway involving a helicopter rescue can be expensive if there is no insurance. The Chamber of Labor warned in a broadcast on Wednesday that the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) would not cover the costs.

Several 10,000 winter sports athletes across Austria are injured while skiing and snowboarding every year. And for up to 3,000 toboggan fans, the fun in the snow ends in the ambulance. If the helicopter has to be requested, it can be really expensive, warns the Lower Austrian Chamber of Labor (AKNÖ) in a press release.

If those affected do not have insurance, the result can be a bill of 4,000 euros or more. Depending on the time and personnel required, the costs can even reach double-digit thousands. “Be sure to think about it beforehand: are you adequately covered in the event of an emergency?” advised AKNÖ President Markus Wieser.

Private insurance required

Private accident insurance, membership in the Alpine Club, mountain rescue, nature lovers or an automobile club can be considered for the recovery costs. The AK recommends that you make sure that your insurance covers rescue, search and transport costs. The insurance conditions should be checked carefully to see whether risks such as tobogganing under the influence of alcohol are insured. It is also worth considering whether insurance makes sense for possible consequences of an accident, such as surgery and elective doctor costs or permanent disability.

Anyone who is out on the mountain and injures someone else or damages their belongings due to carelessness while skiing or tobogganing will be covered by private liability insurance if necessary. This is part of an existing household insurance policy.
