Exit poll: Polish President Duda wins first round but has to go on again Abroad

As a result, Duda – popular with the Catholic, conservative section of the politically highly polarized country – must now get the new five-year term in the decisive second round on July 12 at the expense of Rafal Trzaskowski, the progressive mayor of Warsaw. He finished 2.

“I want to thank everyone for your votes,” President Duda said after the exit poll.

Duda is supported by the conservative-nationalist governmental party Law and Justice (PiS) while Trzaskowski is a candidate for the opposition.

In this round, according to the exit polls, Duda received 41.8% of the vote, Trzaskowski 30.4%. That seems like a big difference, but in the next round some progressive voters who have now voted for one of the other nine candidates will join the Trzaskowski voters. Yet there are also right-wing candidates whose voters are likely to go to Duda.

Turnout was slightly above 60%, higher than the past twenty-five years.
