Exhibition “Pottery from Quinchamalí and Santa Cruz de Cuca” will be inaugurated – La Discusión

During March the Municipality of Chillán will carry out different activities that seek to commemorate and honor the women of the commune. Among them, the inauguration of the exhibition “Pottery of Quinchamalí and Santa Cruz de Cuca” stands out, an exhibition developed by the Heritage Unit (UPA) of the municipality and whose objective is to value the figure of the women artisans of these territories, having as precedent, the recent entry of this expression of intangible heritage to Unesco’s Urgent Safeguarding List of Intangible Heritage.

The exhibition is made up of more than 80 individual portraits of potters, nearly 20 archive photographs, illustrations that educate about the 16 steps for making pottery pieces, six showcases with 30 pieces, as well as archival videos. .

“We are very happy to be able to support this type of initiative, especially because in Chillán. Historically, women have had a preponderant role in each of the spheres of work. In addition, the traditional work of the potters is highlighted, which has given us yet another reason to feel proud to be from this area”, indicates the mayor of Chillán, Camilo Benavente Jiménez.

This exhibition shows the commitment of the Municipality of Chillán to grant visibility and dissemination spaces to the pottery of Quinchamalí and Santa Cruz de Cuca, “even more after the entry of this expression of intangible heritage to the List of Urgent Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage of Unesco, an international milestone that puts us on alert regarding the fragility in which the pottery tradition is found and those who day by day develop this knowledge and centuries-old knowledge”, explains Karin Cárdenas, in charge of the Heritage Unit of the Municipality of Chillán. .

The exhibition will be open to the community throughout March in the Marta Brunet foyer, located on the fourth floor of the Chillán Municipal Theater.

The Heritage Unit of the Municipality of Chillán will carry out during March, and for the third consecutive year, the activity “Guardians of Heritage”, which will have as its theme “Women with history” and that seeks to tell, through illustrations and installations in the public space , the life and work of women who contributed to the protection and dissemination of local heritage.

Among them are Lidia Zúñiga, the only mayoress of Chillán; Berta Cifuentes, architect; Marta Brunet, writer; Lucrecia León, mother of Claudio Arrau; Noemí Mourgues, founder of the Tanagra group; Marta Colvin, sculptor. And in a special way, the former Casa de la Mujer Campesina will also be considered, a building that today houses La Araucana (Isabel Riquelme/Constitución).

Thus, contemporary women will also be recognized, who day by day work in favor of local heritage.

This and many other activities have been prepared by the Heritage Unit of the Municipality of Chillán to commemorate the women who work and worked in favor of local heritage.
