Everyone is advised to do regular physical activity or sport daily. However, exercising on Monday-Friday might be inconvenient for some people nowadays who have a lot of busyness.

But you don’t need to worry. A recent study found that only exercising on the weekends can provide the same benefits as taking time to exercise every day.

In particular, research published in journals JAMA on Tuesday (18/7) found that those who exercised only on the weekends and those who exercised throughout the week experienced a similar reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

Launch CNN, this study uses data from the UK Biobank. More than 100 thousand people use accelerometer devices that can capture the intensity of movement or physical activity for a week.

The researchers then evaluated the relationship between exercise and cardiovascular events that were self-reported in the UK Biobank by each person.

“We found that those who were active on weekdays [Senin-Jumat] and exercising only on the weekends had very similar reduced risks of heart attack, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and stroke [dengan mereka yang berolahraga setiap hari],” said lead study author Shaan Khurshid of Harvard Medical School.

According to internationally recognized guidelines, adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week.

“If you can achieve the recommended level for 1-2 days a week, then our findings show that you get the same benefits as people who exercise every day,” said Khurshid.

Nevertheless, this research still has limitations. One is the segment of the population that is white people. Further research is needed to validate these results.
