Exclusive: Arrest Warrant Requested for Former Samsung Electronics Manager Who Leaked Semiconductor Technology to Chinese Company

We exclusively reported on the news that an arrest warrant was requested for a former manager-level employee who leaked Samsung Electronics’ core semiconductor technology to a Chinese company.

Today, we will provide additional information that MBC exclusively covered.

The prosecution secured document files suspected of being handed over to a Chinese company by the former manager for whom an arrest warrant was requested, which contained all eight major processes of semiconductor production, which consist of a total of 600 steps.

How did they get such confidential information from a semiconductor factory known for its tight security?

First, reporter Jeong Sang-bin reports exclusively.

During the arrest warrant review, former Director Kim denied the charges, but the prosecution reportedly refuted them by presenting key physical evidence.

Former Manager Kim, who recently quit Changshin Memory, set up a new company to supply equipment to Changshin, and is said to have secured key material evidence stored on the company’s server.

The physical evidence was found to be 600 steps of the eight core semiconductor processes, presentation materials and PPT files detailing each step.

Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor factory prohibits file copying as well as email transmission, and strictly blocks the entry of USB and other storage devices.

Perhaps for this reason, it was discovered that the PPT obtained by the prosecution contained a DRAM process diagram that appeared to have been drawn directly.

The prosecution’s view is that this data may have been used by Changshin Memory, which was founded in 2016, when it built a factory and began producing DRAMs four years later.

When former Manager Kim worked at Samsung Electronics, he was considered an expert in ‘deposition’, which involves applying a thin film to a ‘wafer’, a thin plate, among the eight major processes.

Prosecutors believe that former Director Kim passed on the most data on the ‘deposition’ process, which was his specialty, and also passed on overall technology for other processes.

Prosecutors have not yet confirmed the specific amount of money former Director Kim received, so they have not yet applied the charge of receiving kickbacks to the arrest warrant.

However, it is believed that he received at least 10 billion won, including an annual salary of 1 billion won.

The decision on whether to arrest former Director Kim and his accomplices is expected to be made later tonight.
