Exciting Changes Coming to Wolgast: New Cultural Hub in the Works – LED Walls, Cinema, and More!

Wolgast. When Martin Schneider started his role as culture and city manager for the city of Wolgast about two years ago, ideas for a port city were overflowing. The people of Wolgast also approached him with suggestions and projects.

But the former director of the Vorpommersche Landesbühne faced a big problem: “In order to offer culture, you need a stage – at least a large hall,” he knows from experience. And the town of Wolgast had none of these until then.

The old library should be a meeting place

With the move of the city library from Hufelandstrasse to the Volksbank rooms on Chausseestrasse, the situation of the people of Wolgast could change.

At the end of June the book boxes will be packed and loaded. The current library will be a meeting place for young and old.

A cinema is a big wish of many Wolgast residents

One of the most frequently expressed wishes, said Schneider, was to establish a cinema. “With its 600 square meters, the house certainly offers a lot of potential,” says Schneider. Together with project manager Swentja Krumscheidt, he is currently preparing a concept for the hall.

“It was a real desire of the people of Wolgast to create a meeting place. Whether there were large weddings, conferences, seminars, company events or other celebrations of any kind – the people of Wolgast did not have this opportunity. Other larger spaces quickly reach their limits at larger events,” says Schneider. And renting the building to foreigners would bring money back into the city’s coffers.

Martin Schneider has been Wolgast’s culture and city manager for about two years.

LED walls and sound systems are intended to create a cinema atmosphere

A platform for cultural events will be set up in the old city library. An LED wall and sound system should then create a cinema atmosphere. “The first plan is to show a film once a week. Of course, all of this can be expanded, but we have to start with a film first,” says Schneider.

Of course, popcorn and drinks of all kinds are required. A bar will also be built. Sunday should then be reserved for families with a colorful program. “We are thinking of attracting people from Wolgast to us with a puppet theater or children’s films,” says Martin Schneider. On other days, seniors and residents of Wolgast should be able to meet for a board of directors.

A town cinema from Güstrow is supposed to bring films to Wolgast

And what movies will be shown? “For financial reasons, we cannot always show the latest films. We are in talks with the association Dorfkino from Güstrow. They offer cinema films in rural areas. The idea is that they lend us the films. This also works with other cultural providers,” hopes Martin Schneider.

The manager of culture and the town hopes that the plans can be implemented early next year. The town would receive 400,000 euros from a solidarity fund. “Of course the building needs to be remodeled. For example, we need more toilets. The current ones are designed for a library only,” he said.

The mayor is also happy with the new cultural offerings

And when the time comes, the town will also look for a company that offers food and drink there regularly. “It starts with weddings and ends with popcorn for moviegoers,” says Schneider. There’s still a long way to go until then. That’s why Schneider and Swantja Krumscheidt now get to ‘ work and developing a concept.

Mayor Martin Schröter is also pleased with the new cultural offer for the people of Wolgast. But he also emphasizes that it is necessary to look at the library’s offers not only from an artistic point of view, but also from an economic point of view. “We have to show that we can do this economically,” he said.
