Ex-Real president dies of coronavirus

Placed in intensive care last Tuesday, due to serious respiratory problems caused by the Covid-19, Lorenzo Sanz, president of Real Madrid from 1995 to 2000, died Saturday, at 76 years old.

This businessman has marked the history of Merengues, hoisting himself at the head of the club in November 1995, after having been a manager for 10 years. He hired Fabio Capello as a coach and his investment made it possible to recruit Roberto Carlos, Clarence Seedorf, Davor Suker and Predrag Mijatovic. Real therefore offered La Liga in 1997 before returning to victory in the Champions League in 1998 against Juventus.

The arrivals of Steve McManaman and Nicolas Anelka (as well as the progressions of the young Iker Casillas, Raul and Fernando Morientes) allowed the Casa blanca to raise an “Octava” cut with big ears in 2000, against Valencia, a few weeks before Lorenzo Sanz lost the presidential election against Florentino Pérez.

Again defeated by Florentino Pérez in 2004 (then outstripped by Ramon Calderon two years later), he took over the Malaga club in 2006, before selling the Andalusian club to Sheikh Abdullah, of the royal family of Qatar, in 2010. In November 2018, he was sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of 1.2 million euros for tax evasion amounting to almost 6 million euros.
