The amount to be received is part of a long-term settlement between Tohme and Michael Jackson’s family. It started in 2012 when Tohme claimed that he still had to get money for his efforts in the last year that Michael lived. He also felt that he was entitled to part of the proceeds from the documentary This Is It, and believed that he still had a sum of money because he once arranged a loan to save Neverland ranch from bankruptcy.

The case was settled in court last May, but no written settlement was forthcoming. It prompted Tohme to sue the Jackson heirs yet again, successfully.
