“Everything we did came from good intentions”

Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic posted a note on his social media that he regretted the events of the Adria Tour. In total, four players who participated in the Adria Tour tested positive for coronavirus and Djokovic, 17-time Grand Slam champion, was one of them.

“Hi everyone. We are back in Belgrade and I tested positive for COVID-19 as well as Jelena. The children were negative. We will be in self-isolation for the next 14 days and will repeat the test in 5 days, “Djokovic said in a note posted to his Twitter account.

“I am so sorry that our tournament caused harm. Everything that the organizers and I did last month, we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions.

We thought that the tournament respected all health protocols, and the situation in our region seemed to offer good conditions to finally meet for philanthropic reasons. We were wrong and it was too early.

I cannot express how sorry I am for this and for each case of infection. If you attended Adria Tour or if you were with participants, please be tested and practice social distancing.

For those in Belgrade and Zadar, we will share health resources in the immediate future. The rest of the tournament has been canceled and we will remain focused on everyone who has been affected.

I pray for everyone’s full recovery. ”

Novak Djokovic qualified for Zadar for the final but was ultimately canceled

The first stage of the Adria Tour took place in Belgrade from June 13 to 14, while the second stage of the event took place last weekend in Zadar.

Grigor Dimitrov, the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals champion, tested positive for coronavirus this evening Sunday, June 21, after playing in two Adria Tour games. After finishing his campaign in Belgrade, Dimitrov briefly returned to Bulgaria before returning to Zadar.

World number 19 Dimitrov played his first game at Zadar on Saturday afternoon, and he ended up losing easily to Borna Coric after feeling bad on the court.

The Bulgarian withdrew from his Saturday night clash and the next day withdrew from the entire event before returning home to Monaco. Just under an hour before the Adria Tour final between Djokovic and Andrey Rublev, Dimitrov announced on his Instagram account that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.

The organizers of the Adria Tour, no longer wanting to risk anything, canceled the final and the same night all the players were tested except Djokovic – who returned to Belgrade.

Novak Djokovic had not crossed the group stage during the Adria Tour event which took place in Belgrade.
