In parts of the metropolis of New York, more than one in four people may have been infected with the new corona virus. This comes from new preliminary figures from a first antibody study, which the state governor Andrew Cuomo presented on Saturday. According to this, 27.6 percent of the tested antibodies were found in random samples in the Bronx district, which was particularly badly affected and poorer.

For comparison: In the richer Manhattan, this was the case in 17.3 percent of the samples. In total, 19.9 percent of those checked in the city of New York found the antibodies that arise after being infected with the corona virus. For the state of New York, this was 12.3 percent of 15,000 people who were randomly tested.

300 corona deaths in a week

According to the governor’s figures, around 170,000 positive cases had been officially identified in the city of New York, which has a population of around 8.4 million, by Friday. The study data suggest that the actual number may have been around ten times higher. Around 300 people in the state of New York died every day from the diseases caused by the virus last week.

Many researchers assume that those who already had the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen are immune to Covid-19 for at least a certain amount of time. However, current antibody studies are at an early stage of development and it is unclear how accurate they are.
