BerlinAround one in eight drivers in Berlin had to complain about damage to their vehicle in 2019. Cars in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf broke down particularly often. This is the result of statistics for which Generali Insurance in Germany evaluated more than 270,000 claims in 2019. There are around 65.8 million registered vehicles in Germany.
In this year’s analysis of the Generali, Berlin was overtaken by Hamburg in a comparison of the federal states, as the insurance company also announced. With 11.7 damage per 100 inhabitants, Berlin fell just behind the Hanseatic city, which has 12.0 damage per 100 inhabitants.
Overall, the frequency of damage in Berlin has decreased: in 2017 it was 15.5 damage per 100 inhabitants. In 2017, every sixth Berliner had damage to a vehicle. With an average damage amount of 2752 euros, Berlin is a good 400 euros above the national average.
Policyholders from the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district are particularly often affected by vehicle damage. In the Halensee district, the frequency of damage for 2019 was 23.5 percent. The neighboring Wilmersdorf (16.9 percent) and Schmargendorf (15.9 percent) take second and third place. For comparison: around nine percent of all insured persons in Germany reported damage in the past year, according to the insurance company.
On the other hand, things are much more relaxed on the outskirts: In Bohnsdorf (Treptow-Köpenick district) the damage rate is just 7.4 percent. In Borsigwalde (Reinickendorf) it is 8.3 percent and also in Mahlsdorf (Marzahn-Hellersdorf), drivers have to worry less about their vehicles at 8.4 percent.
Roland Stoffels, head of the insurance company, points out that high traffic volumes lead to accidents. According to Generali, 18,000 new cars have been registered in Berlin over the past two years.
