“Evacuation Plans Delayed as Sudan’s Security Situation Remains High-Risk”

“We are trying to coordinate an operation to evacuate our civilians from the city, which is currently in a high-risk situation. We are working on various options to evacuate people,” the official said.

For now, it has been concluded that the security situation is not suitable for such an operation.

The EU and the bloc’s seven member states with missions in Khartoum will closely monitor the situation, waiting for an opportune moment to evacuate, the official said.

Active fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary has been reported in Khartoum and elsewhere in Sudan since last Saturday.

In recent months, tensions between the army and the RSF have grown over the inability to agree on whether to integrate the paramilitary unit into the country’s army and who should oversee the process. The pooling of forces is a key provision in the unsigned Sudan Transitional Administration Agreement.

A power struggle between Sudanese army chief Abdelfattah al-Burhan and his deputy, Rapid Support Force commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, turned deadly on Saturday. More than 400 people have already been killed and hundreds injured in the battles, including an EU official who was shot and an attack on an EU envoy.
