Eurovision fever in the Casinotheater
On Tuesday, Remo Forrer, Michael von der Heide and Sandra Studer will sing their ESC songs in the Casinotheater. They also discuss the social significance of the competition.
“I don’t wanna be a soldier. We ain’t playin’ now. No waterguns» («I don’t want to be a soldier. We’re not playing now. No water guns»), sings Remo Forrer in «Watergun». With the song, the 21-year-old from eastern Switzerland represented Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest and took 20th place in the final. Forrer himself described the song as a “universal appeal to peace”, which the ESC allows, in contrast to clearly political songs. However, hidden political messages are not uncommon at the ESC; shrill costumes and provocative performances just as little. This is probably one of the reasons why the competition enjoys cult status, especially in the LGBTQIA community. The abbreviation stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and the asexual-aromatic spectrum.
