Europe’s new car market is shrinking; BEV cars are being bought more and more

JATO Dynamics has published statistics on the new car market in Europe in the first half of 2022.

In the first half of 2022, the new car market continued to face various challenges. The latest figures published by JATO Dynamics show that the number of new registrations in 27 countries fell by 14% to 5.54 million units compared to the same period in 2021. In this respect, Europe is in solidarity with the USA, where an even greater decline was recorded (-18.2%), but differs from China, which shows a positive development of 3.4%.

The surest trump cards that prevented further decline were SUVs and electric cars. The former had a slight decline of just 4%, accounting for nearly 50% of volume, but the latter fared significantly better: electric vehicle (BEV) registrations rose from 485,000 units in the first half of 2021 to 633,200 units in the first half of 2022, which is an increase of 31%. This means that BEVs now account for 11.4% of the total market, up almost four points from their market share last year.

The biggest seller of BEV vehicles in Europe this year is the Volkswagen Group, followed by the Stellantis concern and Tesla, which depends on car supplies from China, at a time when Europe’s own Gigafactory is still on its way to more capacity. However, Tesla makes a comeback in the individual rating, where the first two places are occupied by Tesla Mode Y and Model 3. In the first half of the year, 44,472 and 39,896 buyers bought the two Tesla models, respectively, while the third place is occupied by the Fiat 500e with 32,777 registrations. Peugeot e-208, Volkswagen ID.4, Kia Niro, Škoda Enyaq, Renault Zoe, Hyundai Kona and Dacia Spring rank in the following places with very similar results.
