European Union New Car Market Continues to Grow for 13th Consecutive Month; Bulgaria Leads with Highest Increase in August Sales

The market for new cars in the countries of the European Union grew for the 13th consecutive month in August (787,626 newly registered cars). The reported growth was 21 percent compared to August 2022, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), published today on its website.

August car sales are traditionally weaker, but the increase this year is a sign that the EU’s new car market is recovering from a slump caused by shortages of auto parts, ACEA said.

Bulgaria was the EU country in which the largest increase was recorded in August (38.7 percent) of registered new cars (3,421) compared to the same month of 2022 (2,482 new cars), according to ACEA data.

In July of this year, the number of newly registered cars in our country was 3,370.

Double-digit growth was also registered in the leading car markets in the EU – Germany (+37.3 per cent, 273,417 newly registered cars), France (+24.3 per cent, 113,599 newly registered cars) and Italy (+11.9 per hundred, 79,727 newly registered cars).

Last month, sales increased in most EU countries compared to August 2022, with the exception of Hungary (-10.4 percent), Slovenia (-3 percent), Ireland (-0.5 percent) and Lithuania ( -0.1 percent).

The share of registered new electric cars in the EU powered entirely by batteries (165,165 e-cars)rising for the first time to over 20 percent of all newly registered cars (21 percent), with a share of 11.6 percent in August 2022.

In Bulgaria, the share of newly registered electric cars last month was 4.4 percent. The largest number were new cars with gasoline engines – 72.9 percent, followed by those with diesel engines – 18.9 percent. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) accounted for 2.3 percent of all newly registered cars.

The share of new cars with gasoline engines in the EU in August was 32.7 percent, those with diesel engines – 12.5 percent, and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) – 23.9 percent.
