European Parliament reacts against LGBT discrimination against LGBT people | NOW

The European Parliament passed a resolution on Thursday declaring the entire European Union a zone of freedom for LGBT people. In this way, the EU offers a counterweight to the violation of civil rights in, for example, Poland and Hungary.

The resolution outweighs national measures that actually restrict the freedom of some groups. Poland, on the contrary, established zones that must be free from the “LGBTI ideology”. Last November, the Hungarian municipality of Nagykáta passed a resolution banning the “distribution and promotion of LGBTI propaganda”.

Sophie in ‘t Veld, MEP on behalf of D66 and one of the authors of the resolution, is concerned about these developments: against what they call the LGBTI ideology. The European Parliament is now opposed to that. “

The resolution states that the EU will become a LGBT freedom zone, regardless of local measures such as the aforementioned Polish zones. The parliamentarians also believe that the European Commission should do more to protect these citizens. Member States that break the rules can be cut.

“LGBTI people should have the same rights throughout the EU to live in freedom and to display their sexual orientation and gender identity in public. They should be able to do so without fear of intolerance, discrimination or persecution.”
