Apple has just developed a great connector, especially for that time. A major improvement over the predecessor, the 30pin connector, and staying true to their promise of making this their connector for the next decade. And there was no such thing as a standard at the time.

Apple has never opposed USB-C, on the contrary. To my knowledge, Apple was one of the first companies to widely implement USB-C on their computers and laptops, and later did this on their tablets. Don’t really understand the sneer at Apple, to be honest?
