European Commission takes option on at least 200 million Johnson & Johnson vaccines

The Commission will take an option on 200 million doses of a future vaccine if it proves to be safe and effective against Covid-19, with the potential to purchase an additional 200 million units. According to the Dutch news agency ANP, the vaccine is being developed under the leadership of the subsidiary Janssen Vaccines in Leiden.

“Our citizens and our economy need a safe and efficient vaccine against the corona virus. Today’s talks bring us closer to that goal, ”said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in the press release. “The European Commission is making every effort, in close cooperation with the Member States and the pharmaceutical companies, to actively pursue that goal.”

The exploratory talks should result in an ‘Advance Purchase Agreement’, which will be funded by the European Instrument for Emergency Aid (ESI). It does not disclose how much the Commission pays for the vaccine.

The Commission says it is holding talks with more pharmaceutical companies. It was previously announced that she had reserved 300 million corona vaccines at Sanofi and GSK. Johnson and Johnson announced earlier than again that they had reached an agreement with the United States for 100 million doses of its future vaccine.
