European Commission takes legal action against Poland over controversial law on Russian influence

The European Commission will take the first step in a legal challenge against Poland over a Polish law on undue Russian influence that critics say could lead to opposition politicians being banned from public office.

The law was met with criticism from lawyers and opposition politicians, as well as the US State Department and the European Commission, who expressed concern that it could effectively bar individuals from holding public office without proper judicial review.

The commission will send a formal letter of notification to Warsaw on Thursday. Poland’s minister for EU affairs, Szymon Szynkowski, responded that the law aims to limit Russian influence and called on democratic nations and institutions to support the initiative.

“We will calmly provide the legal and factual arguments in this case once we have become familiar with the doubts of the European Commission,” he wrote.

The US government also expressed concern about the law, which would allow a commission to investigate whether opposition parties allowed Poland to be unduly influenced by Russia.

The opposition party “Civil Platform” accuses the law of aiming to destroy support for its leader before the upcoming elections. Poland’s president, Andrzej Duda, has announced that he will propose changes to the law.
