European Commission launches environmental initiative

The European Commission has launched the “Green Consumption Pledge” initiative, which calls on companies to take part in climate protection measures.

With the “Green Consumption Pledge” initiative, the European Commission is calling on people and organizations to stand up for a greener Europe. By participating, companies commit to reducing their environmental impact and helping consumers shop more sustainably.

Five key commitments

The central component of the initiative are five core commitments. These commitments relate, for example, to the company’s carbon footprint or the transparency of its products for consumers. Each participating company must take concrete action for at least three of these commitments and provide evidence of its progress using data. The full list of commitments can be found on the European Commission’s website.

Evaluation and next steps

The pilot phase of the initiative will initially run until January 2022. It will then be assessed to what extent companies have been able to keep their promises before further steps are planned. Retail companies that sell both food and non-food products, as well as non-food companies that want to join the initiative, can contact the European Commission until the end of March 2021.
