Europe: Smartphone market slips more than expected in 2022

The market analysis agency Counterpoint Research has now shared its quarterly report for the months of April, May and June 2022. The results, limited to the smartphone and mobile device market in Europe, are particularly bad.

Compared to the first quarter of 2022, the volume of smartphones sold dropped by 13%. It was the worst quarter in Europe since 2013, with the market resenting fewer mobile phones being bought by Europeans during the period under review.

Firstly, Counterpoint points to a drop of 13% compared to the 1st quarter of 2022. In addition, looking at the same period of 2021, we see a drop of 11% compared to the sales figures recorded in the 2nd quarter of 2021 .

Among the reasons for this slide, Counterpoint points out the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, global inflation, as well as fears caused by the War in Ukraine. In any case, in the 2nd quarter of 2022, “only” 40.3 million units were sold.

In view of the above, the market analysis agency states that this was another bad quarter. In addition, we recall that the 1st quarter of 2022 was the worst first quarter since 2013. Now, we have another period of low sales and market failure.

Looking at the results for the second quarter of 2022, we see Samsung in first place and with an increase in market share from 27% to 32%. In second place we have Apple, also with an increase from 21% to 24% of market share.

In third place we have Xiaomi, which lost a lot of market share, falling from 27% to 19%, now being behind Apple in our market. OPPO follows in fourth place, with a slight drop and Realme in fifth place, increasing its market share in Europe to 3%.

According to Counterpoint experts, Samsung’s success was attributed to the performance of the Galaxy S22 range and also to the new Galaxy A. The same can be said of Apple with the return of the cheapest model, the Apple iPhone SE (2022).

Europe on the brink of a new recession

The European market does not bode well for the main brands involved in this segment. According to Counterpoint, several European nations are on the brink of a new recession, even if they didn’t realize it.
