“Europe has made great strides”

Paris (dpa) – French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to his four years of cooperation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). “During these years, we have made Europe progress fast, ”said Emmanuel Macron in Paris on May 31, 2021 at the end of the Franco-German Council of Ministers. The 43-year-old French president stressed that this was the last such meeting with Angela Merkel. The latter, who took office as Chancellor in November 2005, does not plan to stand again in the next federal elections in September.

Emmanuel Macron highlighted the 750 billion euro recovery plan that was put in place by the EU in 2020 to rebuild post-COVID-19 Europe. This program is also financed by European debt. The French president said it was a “historic deal”. He also indicated that the implementation of a new recovery plan was not planned for the moment: “We will see in the coming months if we need an additional ambition”. Emmanuel Macron added that it was important for the EU not to be left behind by the United States and China in exiting the coronavirus crisis.
