Top spot in UEFA Europa League Group F hangs in the balance as Stade Rennais and Villarreal, both already qualified, face off in France in J6.

The Breton team has 12 points in 5 matches and ensured its qualification on the fifth day by winning 3-0 against Maccabi Haifa in Budapest thanks to goals from Martin Terrier (29e minute), Amine Gouiri (47e) and Fabian Rieder (90e+3).

Villarreal, who face Maccabi at home on December 6 in a matchday three match, ensured they finished in the top two places with two games remaining by securing a third straight victory against Panathinaikos ( 3-2) in Spain.

On November 19, Rennes parted ways with their coach Bruno Génésio, replaced by Julien Stéphan. Stéphan, 43, born in Rennes, was part of the technical staff from 2012 to 2021 and was in charge of the senior team between December 2018 and March 2021, winning the Coupe de France in 2018/19 after having SRFC in round of 16 of the Europa League that same season. Villarreal’s only victory in their four visits to France was a 3-0 in the UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-final second leg against Troyes in 1992, after the home side fielded an unqualified player.

Before the second day, the Yellow Submarine’s last meeting with a French team dates back to the round of 16 of the 2017/18 Europa League, a 3-1 first-leg defeat in Lyon followed by a 1-0 defeat home.

The Spanish side are competing in the Europa League for the first time since winning the competition in 2020/21, their first major title, when they beat Manchester United 11-10 on penalties after a draw 1-1 in Gdansk.
