Euronews: The Vienna Orchestra will perform the New Year’s concert for the first time without a “Nazi” arrangement – 2024-05-07 23:16:54

/ world today news/ The Vienna Philharmonic is preparing for the traditional New Year’s performance, which will be held for the 80th time and will be broadcast in 90 countries. However, for the first time at the upcoming New Year’s concert, they will not use the arrangement of Leopold Weninger, who collaborated with the Nazis. In order to clear the concert of the “brown heritage”, it was decided to perform the Strauss march in a new arrangement, reports Euronews.

The Austrians claim that you can get a ticket to the “Golden Hall” on January 1 “only by inheritance” . The Vienna Philharmonic is ready for its most important concert: the New Year’s performance, which will be held on January 1 for the 80th time.

However, 40 million people from 90 countries will be listening to Vienna live. This year, Ordis will conduct Andris Nelsons.

ANDRIS NELSONS, dirigent: I am very happy and satisfied. It’s always great to start the new year with something so positive! This gives the new year a chance to be better than the last. This is a big, symbolic event. Music is a universal language. A resident of any continent will understand the music without words. I am very honored – and of course, a little nervous.

Nelson will have to change the calling card of the concert: the performance traditionally ends with Radetzky’s march, during which the audience stands up and claps in rhythm. It is the work of Strauss, but in Vienna they use the arrangement of Leopold Weninger, known for his active collaboration with the Nazis.

From the new year it was decided to clear the concert from “The Brown Legacy” and to perform the march in a new arrangement.
