Sometimes you could almost feel sorry for them, the Hamburg Towers. Completely overwhelmed, they went down in the first quarter against Partizan Belgrade. Then things went only slightly better with the 77:102 (41:65) defeat in Serbia.
It seemed as if the heated atmosphere in the packed Belgrade hall took the Wilhelmsburg by surprise. A combination of careless turnovers and major set-up problems led to a debacle in the first period. Mathias Lessort (22 points) in particular raged under the Towers basket, into which 14 throws fell. This led to the clear 14:34 deficit at the quarter break.

This mortgage turned out to be too big for the Hanseatic League. The visitors then played at eye level offensively, but defensively they had no answer to the Serbs’ star power. So Belgrade was able to give the towers over thirty points again in the second quarter. And the Towers upswing on the offensive was quickly stopped again.

After the break, the guests fell back into old patterns. The hosts didn’t even have to go to their performance limit. But when they really felt like it, they flexed their muscles. A lesson in towers.
