Euro zone: industrial production plummets in March

Industrial production fell 11.3% in March compared with February in the 19 countries that have adopted the single currency.

Industrial production collapsed in March in the euro zone with the implementation of containment measures against the coronavirus pandemic, said the European Statistics Office Eurostat on Wednesday.

In seasonally adjusted data, industrial production fell 11.3% in March compared with February in the 19 countries that have adopted the single currency. In February, it fell 0.1%.

Among the Member States for which data are available, Italy, the first country affected by the pandemic, recorded the largest decline: -28.4%.

It is followed by Slovakia (-20.3%) and France (-16.4%). Spain is also affected (-11.9%) like Germany (-11.2%).

The largest increases were seen in Ireland (+ 15.5%), Greece and Finland (+ 1.9% each) as well as in Lithuania (+ 0.7%).

For the EU as a whole, industrial production fell 10.4% in March. It had remained stable in February.
