Euro NCAP – BMW i4 got a drag in crash test

(Elbil24): Every new passenger car on the European market must at some point pass the actual fire test in safety; the tough collision tests of the test laboratory Euro NCAP.

The tests are the only common European standard that exists in safety tests, and the manufacturers place great prestige in meeting the goal of five out of five stars.

However, this is not always the case. Some time ago, for example, the Renault Zoe received 0 out of 5 stars, and the Dacia Spring received only 1 out of 5 stars. Both of these models are from now on irrelevant to the Norwegian market.

And even prestige brands like BMW can stumble, it turns out. Euro NCAP recently tested a bunch of new cars, and the all-electric BMW i4 was one of them – and in fact the only one, along with the small car Toyota Aygo, that did not achieve a full house. Instead, both had to settle for four out of five stars.

Four-part test

The cars are measured according to how safe you are in it, and how “kind” the car is with other road users, if you should be unlucky and come across something or someone. The cars are also measured by how good they are at avoiding an accident through active and passive safety systems.

The tests are mainly divided into four parts.

  • Adults in the car
  • Children in the car
  • Soft trafficants
  • Security systems

Here they get moves

If we look more closely at the results for the BMW i4, we see that the car scores very well on the first two points – more than good enough for five out of five stars. But on pedestrian / cyclist protection and driver assistance, the car only gets a moderately good score, which ended up with four of the stars.

“The bumper provided good protection for pedestrians’ legs at all test sites, but the protection of the pelvis was generally poor,” the conclusion states.

The driver assistance mainly works well, but the car gets a deduction for how it warns when the car is on its way out of the roadway. Here it gets 1.8 out of 4 points, which means “marginal performance” – or in the middle of the tree.

In other words, it is far from any total slaughter we are talking about here, even if a four is naturally nothing to beat the table with.

At the top you see a video from the test. You can also read the entire report her.

With the large SUV iX, on the other hand, things went much better for BMW, something you can read about in the case below.
