Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis defends the EU Commission’s call for punitive tariffs on Chinese electric cars. A conversation about unfair competition, Mercosur, the USA and Brexit.

Mr. Dombrovskis, you were in China for four days, quite a long time. What did you bring with you?

We had some difficult topics to discuss: Above all, the sharp increase in trade deficit, which reached almost 400 billion euros last year, and the associated fact that our market is still much more open to Chinese companies than the other way around. Furthermore, I made it clear that we expect more commitment from China to revive the Black Sea Grains Agreement and that it must do more to prevent sanctions against Russia from being circumvented.
