The EU is taking the Dutch government to the Court of Justice of the European Union for various “cross-border” pension rules, the European Commission announced on Friday.
The European Commission believes that a number of pension conditions apply in the Netherlands that are in conflict with EU legislation.
According to the European Commission, the Netherlands violates the free movement of citizens and employees and the free movement of capital with its various pension schemes.
The Netherlands had previously been reprimanded about various pension schemes. Without much result, because the Commission decided on Friday to go to the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg.
Within the Dutch pension system, strict rules apply when it comes to taking out pensions with foreign providers. For example, it is difficult for the Dutch to purchase pension products from a foreign provider.
The Netherlands currently has the largest pension capital of all EU member states.
