EU Approves 13th Sanctions Package Against Russia, Including Bans on 200 Individuals and Companies

On Wednesday, February 21, the members of the European Union (EU) agreed on the 13th set of sanctions against Russia, which should enter into force on Saturday, when it will be two years since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, imposing bans on almost 200 companies and individuals, reports Reuters.

The new package will add 193 organizations and individuals accused of helping Moscow to buy weapons or being involved in the trafficking and kidnapping of Ukrainian children to a list of people banned from entering or doing business in the EU. Both these individuals and companies will also have their assets frozen.

However, new measures against specific sectors of the economy will not be imposed, EU diplomatic sources said.

The new measures target Russia’s military procurement network,

with a particular focus on the drone supply chain. Twenty-seven companies, mostly Russian, but also three from China and one from Hong Kong, were included in Annex 4, banning European companies from selling them dual-use goods.

This set of legal acts will be officially approved on February 24.

The United Kingdom, on the other hand determined sanctions against six people responsible for the prison where Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died last week

six employees of Russian prisons, the head and five of his deputies,

will be banned from entering the UK and their assets will be frozen, British Foreign Minister David Cameron said in a statement.

Cameron said Russian authorities considered Alexei Navalny a threat and had repeatedly tried to silence him. Cameron highlighted the repressive nature of the Russian system, saying those responsible for mistreating Navalny would be brought to justice.

The United States will also announce a broad package of sanctions against Russia on Friday in connection with Navalny’s death and the two-year war in Ukraine, US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday.

Western leaders say Russian authorities, including President Vladimir Putin, are to blame for Navalny’s death, which the Kremlin denies.
