Ethiopian prime minister personally goes to the front to fight with army against rebels | Abroad

The war in the African country has been raging for a year now, thousands of people have been killed. The Ethiopian army, the TPLF and Eritrean militias have committed heinous crimes, according to independent observers. In Tigray, among others, hundreds of thousands of people are starving due to blockades.

The TPLF, which has been in power for 25 years, has repulsed attacks, forged alliances and conquered territories. The Ethiopian army will do things differently, Defense Minister Abraham Belay said after government talks in threatening language, without giving details.

Several western countries have called on their citizens to leave Ethiopia. The African Union is trying to effect a ceasefire through envoy Olusegun Obasanjo, so far to no avail.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned last week that the country is on a devastating path and called on Prime Minister Ahmed to take responsibility and end the violence. His envoy to the region was in Ethiopia last weekend to deliver that message. Washington has previously issued sanctions.
