Tonight, the catch-up game of the fifth matchday at EHC Freiburg was on the program for ESV Kaufbeuren in DEL2. ESVK coach Rob Pallin was able to fall back on Max Lukes, Daniel Oppolzer, Denis Pfaffengut and Tobias Echtler in Breisgau. In addition to Philipp Krauss, defender Leon van der Linde and striker Max Hops were also on board from the U20 team. Max Hops moved into the squad at short notice for Leon Dalldhush, who was out with a hand injury. Striker Sami Blomqvist and defender Jan Bednar were still missing from the regular staff. The goal of the Joker, in the current DEL2 table runner-up, was guarded by Stefan Vajs.

The Jokers then got off to a very bad start to the game. A mistake on Leon van der Linde’s blue line gave EHC Freiburg a two-on-one situation out of nowhere, which top scorer Andre Hult concluded for an early 1-0 lead in minute one. The Joker struggled to find their way into the game and were faced with a power play by the home side in the third minute. The jokers’ outnumbered formations acted well and goalkeeper Stefan Vajs also showed good saves, so that ESVK survived this first outnumbered game without damage. As a result, Chad Bassen had the chance to make it 2-0 on a counterattack alone in front of Stefan Vajs, but the Kaufbeurer goalkeeper remained the winner. On the part of Wertach, Philipp Krauss had a very good chance after good passes from Tyler Spurgeon and John Lammers from the half-position. ESVK top scorer John Lammers also forgave shortly before from a similar situation. The second in the table had more play and Stefan Vajs had to intervene several times. With a little luck and a lot of skill, the Joker survived another power play by the Breisgauers shortly before the break without damage. The narrow lead for ECH Freiburg was definitely okay after the first 20 minutes.

The Jokers then came out of the cabin as if they had been replaced and worked out some good opportunities and sometimes put the home side under great pressure. The Freiburg team were able to break free after a while and had good actions on the offensive themselves. When both teams had only four field players on the ice in minute 32, the Jokers met top scorer John Lammers to equalize 1: 1. The Canadian skilfully covered the target in a duel, pulled from the gang in front of the goal and left Ben Meisner in the Freiburg box no defense. Only 63 seconds later the ESVK even took the lead. Tobias Wörle moved from Coast to Coast in front of the Freiburg goal, Ben Meisner was able to parry the agile striker’s exit, but Branden Gracel then used the rebound to score 1: 2 for the Allgäu. The Jokers had not yet had enough and in minute 37 they added again. Max Lukes conquered the target in fore-checking, pulled it off immediately and Ben Meisner slipped the puck between his arm and upper body and then stayed behind the keeper. Daniel Oppolzer was the first to recognize the situation and made it 3-1 for ESVK. The Kaufbeurer actually had a chance of a fourth goal two minutes before the end of the section in the power play, but it turned out differently than hoped. The Jokers managed next to nothing in these two minutes and finally Marc Wittfoth took advantage of a mistake by Julian Eichinger to score 2: 3 in the 39th minute.

The ESVK also showed a good performance in the final section and was always fierce. Unfortunately, the Joker let the butter be removed from the bread, even through unnecessary punishment. The game was quite balanced. Decisive for the game were two power play goals from the home side, which let the game tip in favor of the table runner-up. In the 51st minute of the game, it was Christian Billich who brought EHC Freiburg to the scoreboard for the third time that evening. The brother of the former ESVK game Steven Billich hit the 3: 3 angle from the slot. For their part, the Jokers could not use a power play in minute 55 and it came as it had to come. Unfortunately, the two main referees overlooked a clear kneeling at Florian Thomas in the 58th minute, but a short time later, Joey Lewis on the ESVK side had to go to the penalty box. The Allgäuer had actually defended the Freiburg powerplay well, but missed the target several times, despite good opportunities to get out of the third and the EHC Freiburg made 4 18 seconds before the end of the season, in the person of André Hult: 3 winning goals. ESVK goalkeeper Stefan Vajs was there, as with the first three goals against, completely powerless.

In the end, the ESVK lost well-deserved points despite a good away game and a strong fighting performance. The reason for this was too many penalties and too many errors on the defensive.
