| Espionage: Ex-minister sentenced to death in Iran

Tehran: Former Minister of State for Defense sentenced to death in Iran on espionage charges. Alireza Akbari, an Iranian-British dual citizen, was sentenced.

Akbari was charged with serious charges including leaking secret information to Britain. The Iranian media reported that the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence, finding it to be true.

Akbari was the Minister of State for Defense during the period 1997-2005. Akbari was a close supporter of Ali Shamkhani, currently secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Akbari was made Minister of State when Ali Shamkhani was the Defense Minister. Akbari has been closely associated with Shamkhani since the war with Iran in the 1980s. He was arrested in 2019. According to Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence, Akbari is one of the most important agents of British intelligence in the country. Akbari also has a decisive influence in strategic positions.

The ministry clarified that through this, critical information is being leaked to the enemy. Meanwhile, British Foreign Minister James Cleverley said Akbari’s execution was a result of political ulterior motives and demanded his immediate release.
