The traditional Peter Wax Foundation competition took place on Friday, December 10, at the Jāzeps Vītols Academy of Music. This is done in collaboration with the Department of Composition headed by Selga Mence and the Department of Wind Instruments headed by Professor Ilona Meija.

This year, the jury evaluated the compositions Pēteris Vasks, Baiba Kurpniece, Andris Dzenitis and Dita Krenberga. Nine instrumentalists interpreted nine compositions in the competition: Katrīne Kuģe, Ieva Lapkovska, Raimonds Gulbis, Laima Ratniece-Miltiņa, Alise Golovacka, Renāte Lodziņa, Elīna Saveļjeva, Elza Rubene and Varvara Zavjalova.

The members of the jury decided this year to award one 1st place, one 2nd place and two 3rd places, as well as a prize for the best interpretation.

Alise Golovacka won the award for best interpretation for her composition “Chains”.

3rd place went to Marina Vidmonte (Prof. Selga Mence) with the composition “Bird of Spring” and Henrijs Poikāns (Prof. Selga Mence) with the composition “Clarinetist from Picasso’s Painting”.

2nd place went to Dace Mangulsone (Prof. Andris Vecumnieks and Prof. Selga Mence) with the composition “Infinite Fall”.

1st place went to Ernests Valts Circenis (doc. Jānis Petraškevičs) with the composition “Ķēdēs”.

The Pēteris Vasks Foundation organizes an annual competition to promote the creation of Latvian chamber music. The best composers are often selected for further collaboration in concerts organized by the Peter Wax Foundation.
