Ernest Jones Born November 22, 1999 in Waycross, Georgia) is an American football player in the position of linebacker. He currently plays for the Los Angeles Rams in the National Football League (NFL).
Jones was born and raised in the US state of Georgia. There he attended Ware County High School, where he was active on the football team. In his last year he was able to record a total of 112 tackles and 2 sacks and was appointed to the first-team All-State of Class AAAAA due to his very good performance.[1] After graduating from high school, he received a scholarship from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina to play on the football team. In his first year, however, he struggled with a back injury and was only used in a total of five games.[2] However, he was all the stronger in his second year, in which he recorded a total of 97 tackles. He played a total of 26 games for the team between 2018 and 2020 and recorded 199 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 interceptions.[3] In his senior year he was even elected a team captain.[1]
In the 2021 NFL draft, Jones was selected in the 3rd round in 103rd place by the Los Angeles Rams.[4] He made his NFL debut on matchday 1 of the 2021 season in a 34-14 win over the Chicago Bears. In the first half of the season, however, Jones was mostly only used in the special teams.[5] After the previous regular player in the position of the Rams linebacker, Kenny Young, was traded to the Denver Broncos at the end of October 2021, Jones also took on a more important role in defense, often as a starter.[5][6] So he came on the 8th game day in the 38:22 win against the Houston Texans for the first time as a starter and was able to catch his first half sack and his first interception from quarterback Davis Mills.[7] In the 30:23 win against the Arizona Cardinals on matchday 14, he was able to catch an interception again, this time from quarterback Kyler Murray.[8] In the 20:10 win against the Seattle Seahawks, he achieved a total of 11 tackles, his career high to date.[9]
