Six award finalists PFA Player of the Year 2023 have been announced. Manchester City dominant by placing three players, one of them Erling Haaland.
The 23-year-old Man City bomber is the favorite after appearing sensational in his first season playing in England. A total of 52 goals were scored by Haaland throughout 2022/2023 to deliver the Citizens won the treble, including 36 goals in the league.
This achievement also made Haaland the top scorer in the Premier League, breaking the previous record set by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole when they scored 32 goals in a season in the 90s.
Haaland will compete with two of his teammates, Kevin de Bruyne and John Stones. De Bruyne has shown consistency after scoring 10 goals and 31 assists in a total of 49 appearances, including seven goals and 18 assists in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Stones showed versatility when manager Pep Guardiola played in the Man City midfield.
Last season’s runner-up, Arsenal, sent two players Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard on the nomination list PFA Player of the Year 2023.
Saka is enjoying his best season after scoring 14 goals plus 11 assists for Cannon London, while Odegaard has shown impressive form leading his team-mates on the pitch and contributing 15 goals and seven assists.
Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane also nominated. Kane scored 30 goals for Spurs before moving to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
Six players were also announced as candidates for the 2023 PFA Young Player of the Year award. Haaland and Saka are back on the shortlist, along with Moises Caicedo, Evan Ferguson (Brighton), Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal) and Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa).
In the 50 years that this award has been held, only three players have won the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards in the same year. Among them are Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
The winners of the 2023 PFA Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year awards will be announced on 29 August.
