Eriksen remembers his darkest moment: “I left this world for five minutes”

Christian Eriksen listens to his return. The Danish midfielder, who suffered a cardiac arrest about seven months ago while during a match for his team at the last European Championship, is getting closer to returning to activity, after being presented as a new Brentford player.

The former Tottenham player spoke with BBC Sports, in an interview in which He recalled the incident he suffered in the 43rd minute of the match against Finland, also referring to how he projects his future after his darkest moment.

“I disappeared from this world for five minutes, until my heartbeat returned”, the flyer began. “It’s an out of this world, strange experience, because it happened and I was where I was, but to see where I am now is very strange,” he added.

Eriksen also recalled the situation in detail. “I remember everything except those five minutes, the throw-in, the ball that hit my knee and I don’t know what happened afterwards. Then I woke up with people around me and I felt a pressure in my chest, trying to catch my breath. I had no idea what had happened at the time, and then I thought, ‘Did something happen to my legs, did I break my back?’” he expressed.

“Can I lift my leg? All these little things she did to see what would happen. Then in the ambulance I heard someone say ‘how long has she been unconscious’ and someone said ‘five minutes’. That was the first time I heard that I had left.”he added, along the same lines.

In addition, he took the opportunity to thank the medical staff who have helped him since then and those who expressed their love for him through social networks: “The first thing is to show gratitude to the people around me. Teammates, the doctors who treated me and then all the messages from the people who showed their support for me and my family. It was really important to see all these messages.”

The former Inter Milan man, a team in which he shared with Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal, had to be released from the Italian club, because Serie A had not allowed its players to enter the field with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, which which led him to sign at Brentford. For Eriksen, having an ICD increases his confidence: “I don’t see any risk. I have an ICD, if something happens to me I know I can be safe”.

On the date of his return, he commented that it is a process that he prefers to carry out with caution: “I have been training with the team for just over a week and it takes time to get in shape. For now, when the coach sees me fit and wants to count on me, I accept. But at the moment we are taking it day by day.”

And, finally, he was optimistic about recovering his best version: “I don’t see any reason why I couldn’t get back to my best level, to be honest. It’s been a long recovery and there’s still a long way to go, but I feel that my return is getting closer and I have the patience to wait for the right moment”.

“It is going to be very special to be able to return to a football field and play after seven or eight months. It’s going to be amazing”he concluded.
